After the tragic Thomas Fires last December, the city of Santa Barbara needed a little extra shine this holiday season. Luxe Interiors + Design and Cearnal Collective Architecture + Interior Design collaborated for the first annual Santa Barbara Shines Window Walk, a luxury design and community building event celebrating the holidays. Starting December 5th, nine vacant State Street store fronts were transformed into one-of-a-kind window designs that will be on display through January 12th.
La Mamma Creative and I collaborated to create Les Illuminations, a dreamy window design located on the corner of Cota Street and State Street. Inspired by DIANI Living’s aesthetic and the magic of the holiday season, designer Genevieve Badone Assili of La Mamma Creative transformed a vacant store front window into a living work of art, with the help of local businesses including Kitchell Custom Homes, DIANI Living, Arnold Brothers Construction, Katherine Reginato, EmmaRose Floral, RMS Flooring and Kneedler Fauchere.
Inspired by the dream-like prose poems of French poet Arthur Rimbaud, Les Illuminations (French for “enlightenment”) celebrates the joy of gathering around a table with family and friends. Genevieve used moody textures and layering techniques to create the overall concept, starting with a stunning handmade cracked gesso wall covering by Nadine Weatherstone of Atelier Wallcovering and dark wood flooring by RMS Flooring.
The tablescape came to life with dinner party details from DIANI Living. For each place setting, Genevieve layered our Linen Runner with a Chamberlin Platter, Cookie Plate, Linen Napkin, Amwell Smoked Glassware and a set of moody Madrid Cutlery. For a subtle center arrangement, she used DIANI Living’s vintage brass candlesticks, beeswax candles and an assortment of glass vases to create the feeling of an intimate dinner gathering.
Appropriately dubbed the “floating pampas cloud,” Genevieve partnered with EmmaRose Floral (@emmarosefloral) to create this dreamy centerpiece. Inspired by the surrealistic quality of Rimbaud’s poems, Genevieve used 100% natural materials and flora, like feathery pampas grass, bunny tail grass and Italian ruscus to give the cloud an illuminating quality.
Genevieve brought in a variety of vintage furnishings – a DIANI Living vintage wood bench and vintage rug as well as an antique hand carved library table and vintage re-upholstered chairs. These stand out pieces helped to anchor the concept in which she built her magical window design.
Thank you La Mamma Creative for the collaboration, Les Illuminations is absolutely stunning and a true work of art. There is no doubt that Santa Barbara’s iconic State Street was brought back to life during the holiday season with your festive window display.
