How to Pack the Perfect Picnic, DIANI Living Style

Santa Barbara’s idyllic spring weather has finally arrived after what seemed like a particularly long and wet winter. So I’m sneaking in all the chances I can get to spend more time outdoors. One of my favorite ways to soak up the sun is by having a picnic. Always enjoyable and endlessly relaxing, picnics are easy to put together and make a great last minute weekend adventure – whether you go as a group, solo with your pup or with a partner. Over the years I’ve cultivated some key picnic staples that take this outdoor activity to the next level.

BRING A BLANKET, OR TWO

There are endless picnic spots to choose from in Santa Barbara County, but I love to discover new ones. Whichever patch of green you choose I like to keep two blankets in tow for extra comfort. Recently I’ve been using the Chambray Table Cloth as the base and layering our new Allen Throw in light grey on top. Crafted from Belgian linen and Peruvian alpaca, the Allen Throw is lightweight, yet cozy. It’s super soft to lounge on and serves as a handy wrap when that ocean breeze kicks in.

PACK SIMPLE, FRESH FOODS

When it comes to eating outdoors on the ground, I find it’s easiest to bring along a variety of simple, fresh foods. And there is no better time to do so than in the spring and summer months when juicy fruits like strawberries are in season. Pair these sweet treats with a baguette and your favorite cheese for the perfect picnic snack.

Our bamboo bowls and plates are not only pretty, they are functional too. Free of solvents and volatile organic compounds, these eco-friendly favorites are perfect for picnic meals. Plus they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, are breakage-free and clean up easily. Our Maple Board is the perfect size to pack away for picnic cheese boards and don’t forget our Hand Forged Brass Cheese knife.

PILE ON THE PILLOWS

While this might be less conventional, I have found that bringing a couple of your favorite pillows makes picnic lounging that much more comfortable. I create our custom designed DIANI Living pillows using vintage fabrics, a cruelty-free insert and a soft English linen backing. This time of year I love using a classic linen pillow and this vintage striped one for alfresco dining.

SIP SUSTAINABLY

It’s not a picnic without your favorite springtime beverage. There is something so satisfying about enjoying a glass of rosé while picnicking in the warm summer sun. Lightweight and sustainable, I prefer sipping out of our bamboo mugs, they’re a breeze to pack up and come with a cork top to keep out bugs and prevent unwanted spillage.

THE PERFECT PICNIC TOTE

When it comes to packing for a picnic I love to use the Palm Tote. Handwoven by artisans in Rwanda, this basket is made from locally sourced palm leaf. It’s the perfect size and durability to fit a few plates, bowls, napkins and mugs. Plus, the woven design is made for summer adventures.

If the warm weather hasn’t inspired you to plan a picnic, I hope this post has. Stop by DIANI Living or place an order online for all of your picnicking essentials!
