Caroline's Winter Coat Guide

With cooler temperatures comes more layers. And a common challenge with more layers is finding a way to feel like ourselves and have an elegant silhouette instead of one that is bulky. However, not all winter weather is equal - if you’re on the West coast, or in more southerly climes, your layering may be lighter than those in the cooler climates. This week I’m highlighting investment pieces that, when chosen wisely, can be on rotation for years to come. To help you choose the best coat for your wardrobe, and location, I’m showing you some of my favorites that check the style boxes without sacrificing function.

The Limiza Checked Twill Coat from Isabel Marant Étoile and its oversized menswear inspired shape makes it very versatile for layering whilst offering an effortlessly chic silhouette. I'm layering it here over the Chunky Cable Zipper Sweater from Ganni, styled with the R13 Alison Skinny Jeans and my favorite Alberone Chelsea Boots from Diemme.

When that chill hits, a puffer coat is essential for staying cozy and comfortable. But finding one that's warm, flattering (without the bulk factor), and stylish, can be hard to come by. Which is why I'm currently loving the Classic Nylon Raglan Sleeve Knit Cuff Coat from Herno. Slightly oversized, but not bulky, this coat is made using an innovative padding technology that makes it extremely light, soft and flattering. For mild winters, layer over a long sleeved tee, and in colder climates, layer over a sweater, like this Ivan Turtleneck Knit Sweater from Chufy.

A timeless coat with vintage appeal, the Isabel Marant Étoile Jabadi Jacket adds warmth and elegance to any outfit. Made from 100% virgin wool with a double cotton lining, this jacket will keep you warm in a variety of climates, and its oversized fit layers well over many different looks – from a dress in warmer climates to a sweater in cooler climes. This chic jacket is one you'll wear on rotation for years to come, and with the right care, pass down to the next generation. I'm styling it here with the same jeans, the Ivan Sweater, and the Golden Goose Running Sneakers.

If you're looking to add a statement coat to your collection, look no further. The Ballon Sleeve Quilted Jacket from Ganni is perfect for staying warm and adding flair to more basic looks. It's made from a quilted ripstop tech fabric for resistance against tearing and ripping, and features elasticized cuffed sleeves, a pointed collar and ruffle edge detailing. I'm creating a monochromatic look here and pairing this jacket over the Chunky Cable Zipper Sweater from Ganni with the same denim and boots.

A winter staple in my wardrobe is a chic coat that will keep me cozy, whilst also elevating my everyday looks. Enter the highly covetable Nori Sash Coat from Mackage. This two-in-one coat has a removal high collar rib knit bib for that extra layer of warmth. It's finely crafted with double faced wool and the leather sash belt gives the silhouette some shape. I'm styling it here over the lightweight Lynette Turtleneck from Nili Lotan (perfect for more mild winters), and the same jeans and boots.

This bestselling silhouette made headlines when it was worn by Meghan Markle. This season's rendition is made using a classic herringbone tweed with the same tailored silhouette, pagoda padded shoulder and high back vent. From coast to coast, The Pagoda Brando Coat from Smythe is one of my winter favorites. I'm styling it here with the Lynette Turtleneck, and the same jeans and boots for easy daytime wear. It's also a great coat layered over dresses and pants.

Guaranteed to keep you warm and elevate your everyday outfit, the Sven Coat from Vanessa Bruno is that classic belt coat that never goes out of style. The roomy shape is suited for layering over a variety of knits, whilst the belted waist can be tied more loosely or knotted for an hourglass silhouette. I'm styling it two different ways: layered over the Lynette Turtleneck sweater and worn open with the Megan Turtle Neck Bib from Isabel Marant Étoile. Similar to a "dickie," this sleeveless sweater adds an extra layer of warmth without the bulk in the arms.

Finding the right under layers for winter dressing can be tricky, which is why I like to have a few simple layering options that I can wear depending on the temperature. For more fitted coats or if you live in a more mild winter climate, the Lynette Turtleneck is made from a fine knit cashmere and perfect as a lighter layer. Alternatively, the Chunky Cable Sweater and the Ivan Turtleneck Sweater are thicker and perfect for cold winters and layering over more oversized coats. And if you have a tighter sleeved coat, but still need that added warmth, the Megan Turtle Neck Bib is a sleeveless sweater with a high neck style.

Keeping your feet warm and dry in the winter months is essential, so why not do it in style. My favorite socks to throw on with boots or sneakers are from Hansel From Basel. They're made from a cashmere-wool blend and come in a variety of fun prints. My current favorites are the Backyard Crew Socks, Love Crew Socks in navy and camel, and the Cactus Crew Socks
