The October Edit With Caroline
I had a lot of fun building up my fall wardrobe in last week’s blog post and I'm so happy that it resonated and helped so many of you! For those who asked about accessories, I thought I’d include my go-to’s in this month’s edition of The Edit. If you’re new to my blog, every month I share my current favorites – from clothing and accessories, to wellness and skincare, and of course, home and lifestyle. Since I’ve been reading more lately, for The October Edit, I’m sharing my favorite books including coffee table reads and novels. I’ve also been enjoying a cocktail cozied up on the couch, so I have your fall happy hour essentials rounded up too…
As an extension of last week's post, I’m highlighting my fall accessory picks for pulling your outfits together. In the cooler months, I like to bundle up in the Luxe Scarf from Jane Carr. With a brushed soft finish with raw fringed ends, it can be worn as a blanket when traveling too. New to my wardrobe are the cozy Tall Socks from Lauren Manoogian which I'll be wearing under tall boots and basically anytime I want warm feet around the house.
My eyesight isn't what it used to be, but luckily we don’t have to sacrifice style, thanks to the Hooper reading glasses. They have a lightweight frame, light gold tinted lens, and a blue light blocking feature. As for sunnies, I love the classic, vintage inspired design of the Coleridge, plus the dark lens is perfect for this time of year.
Hints of gold jewelry will elevate even the most basic outfit and I'm a huge fan of anything gold or brass. My go-to pieces are these Hoop earrings for more of a statement look, the gold-plated brass Sabi statement ring for everyday wear and this Capsule link bracelet, an elegant accessory you'll wear for years to come. All of these pieces are handcrafted by local artisans in my birthplace, Kenya using traditional techniques, so they're especially close to my heart.
When I’m on the go, a handbag is not always the most convenient. Which is why I love the Porte Mobile, an envelope pouch with two compartments – one for your cards and the other for your smartphone. However, when I’m in need of a handbag, the Edgar is one of my favorites for its versatile shape and color. Plus, it doubles as a shoulder bag and a crossbody, making it a wardrobe must.
When cooler temperatures hit, Jeffrey and I like to take happy hour indoors by the fire. While I’m a tequila girl at heart, it’s fun to mix things up this time of year and love to reference Cocktail Codex, a coffee table book and guide for the cocktail enthusiast.
When it comes to glassware, my new favorite additions are the Ouessant tumbler for cocktails and drinks on the rocks, and the elegant Lyonnais wine glass in grey, paired with the matching carafe.
A new addition to my bar cart are these two beautiful fluted decanters (here and here). Made from 100% handblown glass, these pieces are delicate, yet durable. Show off the exquisite designs on a vanity or table top, filled with your favorite beverage. They're actually great for sweets too.
A seasonal favorite that I pull out every October are the Skull shot glasses. Fill them with your favorite liquor for a spooky take on cocktail hour. And when it’s time to call it a night, we love using this handcrafted bottle stopper from local artist, Peter Horjus.
Pair a few light nibbles with your drink using this round marble board. With its chic versatile design, this is my go-to serving dish for cheeses and light appetizers.
I typically have an assortment of books around my house at any given time – coffee table reads to flip through for inspiration, stacks of favorites by my bedside and cookbooks with recipes bookmarked.
Our current best seller and one of my top five books of all time, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse is a heartwarming picture book for all ages. It follows the story of four unlikely friends and their most important life lessons – kindness, friendship and self-esteem.
Described by NPR as an “escape" and "uplifting read", The Fortnight In September is about ordinary people enjoying life's simple pleasures. It's our newest book in the store and my current read this weekend.
When I’m in need of some inspiration, there's nothing like a good coffee table read. I’m currently devouring Bill Cunningham: On The Street, which features the first published collection of photographs by the street style icon who I was lucky to run into during Fashion Week in NY many years ago.
And with Kenyan roots of my own, this Peter Beard tome features a collage of photography, ecology and diary writing by the contemporary artist, highlighting Kenya's vanishing wildlife.
Former Rolling Stones bassist and photographer Bill Wyman captures life on-stage, backstage and on the road in Stones From The Inside: Rare And Unseen Images. With the holidays around the corner, this book is a great gift idea.
For interior design inspiration, Down To Earth is an approachable guide to bringing nature and easy living into your home. Lauren Liess shows readers how to incorporate six guiding principles into six unique homes – from a farmhouse to a modern villa.
Guaranteed to lift your spirits, Joy! features photographs of life’s happiest moments – from a child’s laughter to a grandmother’s smile. Perfect for sharing with new parents, loved ones or a friend in need of a pick-me-up. And don't forget yourself on the list.
I've gushed about this book here, and it's still one of my favorite wellness reads. The New Rules Of Aging Well is the perfect guide for explaining how lifestyle changes can impact health and the aging process. A must for all women over 40!
A James Beard Award Winner and a favorite in our kitchen, Six Seasons highlights the evolving attributes of vegetables throughout their growing seasons with 225 recipes that won't disappoint. Jeffrey and I love how well it's laid out per season and helps keep dinners interesting and full of variety.
I always look forward to this time of year and all that it has to offer, especially the fall colors. It feels like the perfect time to add cozy accessories to my wardrobe, pick up some new books to inspire, and discover a new seasonal cocktail. I hope my collection of favorites inspire you to embrace the season as well. Happy Fall, friends!
