Caroline's Steps For A Bedroom Refresh

Sometimes the inspiration behind a room refresh can come from the simplest thing, like a fresh bouquet of peonies. As soon as I placed them on my nightstand I felt the urge to wash my bedding, which then led to doing away with a wintery throw, which then led to bringing in some new throw cushions, and so on and so on. My husband likes to call it “Mission Creep,” I like to call it the creative flow that’s ever evolving in the rooms of our home. So, for this week’s post, I thought I’d share the steps I take to refresh our bedroom when inspiration strikes.

We spend almost a third of our life sleeping, so the bed is a good place to focus when giving your bedroom a refresh. A couple of years ago, we purchased an Avocado Mattress and love how comfortable and supportive it is, whilst also being toxic-free and gentle on the environment too. It’s certified organic and handcrafted in California using natural materials, like wool, cotton and rubber primarily sourced from the company’s own farms. They maintain ethical and sustainable practices too and screen their mattresses against 6,500 harmful chemicals making them safe for us and the planet.

And I keep adding to our collection too - most recently, the Avocado Mattress Protector and Pillows, which are made from organic latex and kapok, and come with an organic cotton liner and quilted cover for a natural, plush feel that sleeps cool, light and airy.

As you may already know, I love linen bedding for its natural fibers and ability to regulate body temperature throughout the seasons. I’m also drawn to a monochromatic color palette to help anchor the room and create a calming environment for relaxation. My go-to’s are the linen fitted sheet and linen flat sheet in the natural color from Cultiver. I also use their linen duvet cover in natural over my insert, which is from Coyuchi. This wool duvet insert is a great alternative to down and acts as a natural insulator, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. And since I’m a sucker for wrinkle-free bedding, I always have this portable steamer (similar one here) on hand. It’s perfect for getting all those stubborn creases out of bed linens after washing and is great for clothing and table linens too.

The last step in refreshing the bed (and my personal favorite) is adding in throw cushions. Now that spring is here, I’ve been looking to bring in subtle prints and lighter shades, so I went with an assortment of my custom designed cushions, like the Grey Stripe Grain Sack Cushion with Poms for the bed and this Multi Stripe Natural Grain Sack Cushion on our side chair. They both add a subtle print and texture in the room which offers some much needed dimension when styling in a monochromatic way.

I also love these Grey Batik Cushions (see here and here), which I often lay on the floor to create a cozy spot for morning stretching or meditation. I recently began incorporating The Untamed Elemental oracle deck into my routine when time permits to promote self awareness. It's a great way to start the day with intention and clarity before getting swept away with work. And a rattan tray is handy for transporting items around a room, organizing books on a nightstand or enjoying a Sunday morning breakfast in bed!

Having the right elements on a bedside table also helps to create a calm, inviting space. And mine can easily get quite cluttered with papers, books, laptop, etc., so decluttering frequently is a great step to refreshing. This time of year, I like to add fresh flowers in a pretty vase, like the handmade Lace Painted Vase and the Anfora Vase. Sometimes flowers or foliage can be instrumental in informing the colors and textures of the room. And for me, the color pop of peonies was the perfect addition to my muted color palette.

I also like to have a few essentials close by to ease me into my evening routine, like the fan favorite Calming Temple Balm that I rub into my pulse points for relaxation, and the Hydrating Body Cream for all over moisture. Lighting a candle is another evening ritual that I enjoy, and right now I’m loving this Milk Candle. The unique shape stands alone as an objet d'art and the 100% organic soy wax burns cleanly. This pretty Dandelion Paperweight is a memento that I cherish and another way to bring a hint of nature into the bedroom.

Caroline's steps for refreshing your bedroom

A bedroom is everyone's sanctuary, so giving it a seasonal refresh is well worth the time and energy and a great expression of self care. These steps are really simple and can be built over time. Even picking some foliage on a walk can be the perfect start to get the creative juices flowing. As always, we're here to help with any questions. Happy Sunday, friends.

Sending lots of love,
