Caroline's Picks For Poolside Lounging
When I need to slow down and take a minute for myself, one of my favorite places to retreat to is poolside in the garden. It’s the perfect spot to unwind on our shady daybed, listening to the birds and the canyon breeze. Getting away from it all without having to travel has its perks, and to make the most out of my own private oasis, I like to dress for the occasion, have all of my favorite essentials within arm's reach and get comfortable. So here’s a round up of what I’m wearing, packing and lounging with by the pool this summer...
Before heading outside, I like to throw on something easy that layers well over a bathing suit, but still looks and feels chic. This versatile dress from Jesse Kamm has been my go-to since the start of summer. I love how the shape is an updated version of the classic shirt dress, but with a roomy fit and an adjustable and removable lasso belt. You can easily wear this dress from the office, to the pool to dinner out – the options are endless.
I also grab this lightweight fringed throw, which doubles as a great pool towel. Handcrafted using traditional looms and made from 100% cotton, this towel is hand-dyed using natural indigo to get that classic summer stripe print. And this time of year I always bring along my favorite handcrafted straw hat. It has UPF 50 sun protection, an interior stretch headband and a secure nylon strap. Plus, it floats if dropped in the water – simply hang to dry.
When it comes to poolside accessories and skincare, I tend to stick with what works and rotate in new favorites from season to season. The Ursa Major face wipes have been a year round essential for a few years now. They instantly clean, exfoliate, soothe and hydrate, leaving my skin feeling refreshed without stripping it of its natural oils. They're perfect for wiping off sweat, sunscreen, salt or pool water and, they have a wonderful orange, lavender and fir scent and are individually packed, so I can grab a couple and head to the pool, beach or workout.
One of my favorite sandals of the season and a nice elevated version of a flip flop are the Saita sandal from Ancient Greek Sandals. The gold straps add a touch of glam to a simple swim suit or cover up, and they're super comfortable.
For an easy skin refresher, I love this all natural aloe + rosewater balancing mist. The lightly hydrating toner balances skin’s pH with a mix of rose, aloe vera, hibiscus and witch hazel. It feels super refreshing to spritz on after a dip in the pool. And, when my lips are feeling parched, I've been applying this new all natural lip balm. Made from a soothing blend of grapeseed oil, sunflower oil and vitamin E, it keeps my lips soft, hydrated and protected from the sun.
A classic pair of sunnies is a must when I’m outside for the afternoon. Lately, I’ve been wearing the Ellice sunglasses from Oliver Peoples – a colorful take on a timeless vintage style. The pink tinted frame feels feminine and tonal with any cover up.
I’ve been using the all natural mineral sunscreen from Salt + Stone. It’s lightweight and non-greasy, doesn't clog my pores, but still has SPF 30 with non-nano zinc oxide to block out UVA + UVB rays. I love that it’s water and sweat resistant, and withstands a few dips in the pool. Plus, the addition of hyaluronic acid and ashwagandha is great for soothing and moisturizing dry, summer skin.
Snacking by the pool is made easy with this bamboo bowl. It’s a great size for fruit or a small salad and I don’t have to worry about breakage while using it outdoors. These bowls come in a few different sizes, so you can mix and match, depending on the occasion. Shop the full collection here!
Last, but certainly not least, is setting up the daybed with plush pillows and my favorite bedrolls. Made from 100% cotton, this beautiful topper is handwoven, hand-dyed, and a favorite addition to my garden this summer. I also added this stripped and indigo-dyed cushion (see here) to my rattan chair for some extra comfort.
An afternoon by the pool is the perfect antidote after a busy week. And with the right summertime essentials, it's true what they say – vacation is a state of mind. What's your favorite way to relax and unwind during the summer months?
